Lore

Among the countless inventions credited to the eccentric gnome artificer Cassiodora Inayaris Pompellini Xifilius, none has inspired more envy among wizards, merchants, and adventurers than the Temporal Dome. Cass originally devised the artifact not as a weapon or a tool of war, but as a solution to what she considered the greatest obstacle facing any inventor: the stubborn refusal of time to provide enough hours in the day. Frustrated by deadlines, impatient clients, and the inconvenient need for sleep, she spent nearly two decades studying chronomancy, planar mechanics, and the strange temporal currents said to flow through the Astral Sea. The result was a crystal sphere capable of bending the passage of time within a carefully stabilized field, allowing months of work to be completed while only days passed beyond its boundaries.
The first public demonstration of the Temporal Dome reportedly caused a minor scandal in Waterdeep. Witnesses watched Cass enter the newly formed dome carrying unfinished blueprints and a week's worth of provisions. Mere moments later, she emerged with a tangled beard, bloodshot eyes, and an armful of completed prototypes, claiming she had spent six uninterrupted days perfecting her designs. While the Lords of Waterdeep quickly recognized the item's potential value, they also recognized its dangers. Early versions were notorious for causing disorientation, memory lapses, and occasional bouts of existential panic among those who spent too long isolated from the world's normal flow of time. One unfortunate apprentice reportedly emerged convinced that everyone he knew had died centuries ago, despite having spent only a single accelerated week within the dome.
Today, surviving Temporal Domes are considered priceless treasures among scholars, artificers, and powerful organizations. Entire magical research projects have been completed within their accelerated confines, and legends tell of adventuring parties using them to master new spells, craft legendary equipment, or recover from devastating injuries while pursuing foes who believed they had little time to prepare. Yet even among those fortunate enough to possess one, a saying persists: "The Dome gives time, but it never gives it back." Veterans of extended use often speak of a subtle sense of detachment from the outside world, carrying memories of weeks and months that, for everyone else, never truly happened.
