Boom Jug
wondrous item (consumable), very rare
A boom jug is a thick clay vessel filled with an unstable alchemical incendiary. Rather than a normal stopper, the jug is sealed with a torch jammed into its neck. The contents churn and bubble constantly, and anyone carrying one can feel the occasional thump from within, as though the jug itself is impatient.
Boom jugs are not precision weapons. They are tools of overwhelming destruction, designed to turn a battlefield into an inferno. Most sensible adventurers carry them in extradimensional storage and retrieve them only when they intend to use them immediately.
Detonation
As an action, you can throw the boom jug to a point you can see within 60 feet. The jug shatters on impact, scattering burning alchemical gel across a wide area. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes fire damage and is set ablaze. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not set ablaze.
Burning ground
The explosion coats the area in sticky incendiary compounds that burn for 1 minute. The affected area becomes difficult terrain for the duration. When a creature ends its turn in the area, it takes fire damage and becomes ablaze.
Ablaze
An ablaze creature takes fire damage at the start of each of its turns. The flames persist until extinguished. A creature can use its action to extinguish the flames on itself, or another creature within 5 feet can do so. The flames are also extinguished if the creature is submerged in water or otherwise subjected to an effect capable of smothering a fire.Volatile
Whenever the boom jug is dropped, struck, thrown without detonating, subjected to violent impact, or otherwise handled roughly, roll a d10. On a 1, the boom jug detonates immediately, centered on its current location.Whenever the boom jug is exposed to fire damage, even while being carried, roll a d4. On a 1, the boom jug detonates immediately, centered on its current location.
